i really have no idea what this has to do with survival skills

Actually she has identifying which plants and berries are poisonous. She was quizzing herself. It’s foreshadowing because she later dies from eating poisonous berries; in the book, it’s seen as a foolish mistake, but because of this scene, it has implications of suicide.

I think I’m going to lose Johanna when we realize it’s pouring outside. Her face turns ashen and she seems to have ceased breathing. “It’s just water. It won’t kill us,” I say. She clenches her jaw and stomps out into the mud.

A Not Sleeping Session

Katniss is in a deep sleep, but Johanna is not sleeping at all. “Katniss” Johanna calls in a low voice, “Katniss” she repeats. The girl is now waking up and is trying to focus on what is going on around her. “Hey, Katniss. I can’t sleep, can you help me?” Johanna asks. Katniss rub her eyes and tries to understand what is she asking. “What about we do something else?” Katniss says, the look in her face seems she is not saying something cute or sweet, it’s time to go wild.
